A Crime Watch has been issued by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for our neighborhood and The Woodlands. There have been a string of break-ins in our neighborhoods over the last few weeks, most of which occurred during the day. Police distributed flyers concerning this problem last weekend.
Here are some tips on how to stay safe this holiday season:
-Keep your outside lights on at night.
-Don't leave valuables on the seat or in the floorboard of your automobiles.
-Keep your curtains closed.
-Keep your alarm system armed, if you have one.
-Keep your garage doors down unless you are in the garage or outside.
-Keep valuables in your house out of plain view or in a safe.
-When disposing of trash, be discreet about leaving boxes out where people can see what you've bought.
On behalf of Sunset Village Neighborhood Association, we hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

September Meeting
I have sent out an email to everyone regarding the monthly meeting for September. It has been suggested to me that we change the meeting day from Thursday to Saturday each month going forward. In order to do that, we need to vote on this issue. In the email that I sent out, I asked that each of you please send your preference to me as to which day suits you the best. The responses that I receive will be considered your vote and a decision will be made based on the majority vote. For anyone reading this that did not get the email, please email your vote to:
sunsetvillageneighborhood@hotmail.com. I will post the results in the next few days on this website. Please make sure that you send you vote in as soon as possible as we have a meeting scheduled for next week and we need to get flyers printed and distributed.
Just so everyone knows, some of the issues that we need to discuss at our next meeting are:
1) Volunteers - we need volunteers for various board positions, committees, etc. Right off I can think of one committees that needs a chairperson and volunteers. That's the trash pick-up committee. I'm sure you guys have noticed that there is lots of trash littering up our neighborhood. In order to make the Association a real success, we must all participate. We also need volunteers for printing and distribution of the monthly flyers.
2) Speed Bumps - several people have asked whether we are still going to get speed bumps. As far as I'm concerned, we are. This is something that we need to discuss and vote on at the next meeting.
3) Speed Limit Signs - again, several people have asked whether we are going to get speed limit signs. We are but first all of the streets in the neighborhood need to be turned over to the City. I will follow up on the status of this and advise everyone at the meeting next week.
4) Board Members - we have several vacancies on the Board and we will nominations or volunteers to fill those positions immediately. Our bylaws state that a position on the Board will not remain open for more than 2 consecutive months. Please come prepared to give suggestions / nominations.
5) Neighborhood Watch - we need to discuss block captains, fill several open positions for block captains and make sure that we have completed forms for everyone in the neighborhood.
6) Neighborhood Activities - we need to discuss any neighborhood activities that we would like to plan. Several suggestions have been made for the following: Block parties, cookouts and a community yard sale. Please be prepared to give any ideas and suggestions that you have on this subject as well.
Thanks and I look forward to receiving a response from everyone about the meeting date and look forward to seeing you all at the meeting.
Thanks,
Rebecca

Upcoming Events
Edited on July 27 - This event has been cancelled in our neighborhood. If anyone is interested in pursuing this, please contact one of the board members. At this time we feel that the estimated participation rate would not be high enough to justify the money and work involved in hosting this event.
We have several things going on in our neighborhood over the next few weeks:
Sunday, July 22 - Event Committee Meeting @ Rebecca's house
SAVE THE DATE: Tuesday, August 7 @ 7pm - National Night Out (Check back over the next couple of weeks for more information on this event.)

WORK DAY - JUNE 1st at 6:00 p.m.
Just a reminder that we are having a neighborhood work day on June 1 starting at 6:00 p.m. This basically means that we'll have about 2 1/2 hours to get some things accomplished in the neighborhood. So here's the plan. Let's meet at the corner of South Wind Drive and Daylilly Lane at 6:00 p.m. If some of you can bring trash bags that would be great. We'll have some people out picking up trash and others working on our little mountain at the seconday entranceway. Also, if we have yards that need to be cut, we can get some people working on that.
On the issue of grass-cutting, I have recruited a few of our young men to cut grass. I was out and about the other night and asked them if they would be interested. They both said that they would be. Now we will just need to round up some lawnmowers for them to use.
If any of you can think of anything else that we should work on Friday evening, post a comment and tell us. I hope that we can make the most out of our 2 1/2 hours and really get some things accomplished.
Other Reminders: 2nd Quarter dues need to be paid by the end of June.
We have drafted violation warnings and are in the process of finalizing those. We plan to have Officer Overcash at our June meeting to discuss our legal enforcability rights for certain issues.
As always, if you see any suspicious activity in the neighborhood, please call 911 if appropriate and contact our Neighborhood Watch Chairperson, Alfred Tillman at 704-906-0329 or Neighbhood Watch Assistant, Rebecca Steen, at 704-965-6627.
Look forward to seeing you all next Friday.
Sincerely, Rebecca

News in the Neighborhood
Our treasurer, Pat Birch, informed us that there was a stabbing that took place across the street from her house last week on Mandy Place Court. Apparently some kids (ages unknown) had a fight and one decided to stab the other. Pat said that there were at least 10 cop cars in the neighborhood. We were told that the victim will recover. I have no further details at this time but an update will be given at the next meeting which will be held on Thursday, April 19, at the church.
Blessings, Rebecca

STREET LIGHTS
I'm sure by now all of you have seen the white Duke Energy flags and stakes in various yards throughout the neighborhood. How exciting!!! We are finally getting street lights. Beazer and Duke Power have not told me when the lights will be installed but my guess would be in the next week. This is something that we can ALL be proud of!!!!
We hope to have the minutes posted in the next few days so please check back.

February Meeting
Tonight we had our monthly meeting. We have two big announcements:
First, we have a new President. Darla Butler accepted our nomination as President and was voted in at tonight's meeting. Congratulations Darla! We are so excited to have her as Presidnet of our Association. Darla is great with people, very friendly and outgoing and very responsible. She will make a wonderful addition to the Board of Directors!!!
Second, we are getting street lights!!! YES, it's true!!! After years of waiting, Beazer Homes accepted our proposal for installing street lights prior to their turning the streets over to the City of Charlotte. Beazer also agreed to absorb all costs associated with the installation of the street lights. We will have approximately 33 lights installed in the neighborhood, most of which are already pre-wired and visible in some neighbors' yards. We will be getting more information from Beazer as to when Duke Power will start the installation. We will post this information when we get it.
Within the next few days, we will post the preliminary minutes from tonight's meeting for everyone to view.
That's all for now. More information will be forthcoming in the next few days.
Blessings,
Rebecca

Safe Community Forum - Thursday, February 8th
I received an email from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department regarding a Safe Community Forum that they are sponsoring this Thursday night, February 8 at 6:30 p.m. It will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 6230 Beatties Ford Road. I believe that this would be a great opportunity for us to find out what is going on in our area and voice our concerns and opinions. We already have a small group planning to attend and some of us are carpooling. If you are interested in carpooling, please let us know by posting a comment or you can email us at: sunsetvillageneighborhood@hotmail.com.
Thanks and hope to see you there!
